How to Register for VAT Online with SARS
A practical checklist for preparing a SARS VAT registration application online, including records and threshold checks.
Last updated: 19 May 2026
Before you apply
Confirm whether VAT registration is compulsory or voluntary before starting the application. Check taxable supplies, expected turnover, business activities, bank details, registered details and whether the person applying is authorised to act for the business.
Information to prepare
- Business registration and taxpayer details.
- Representative or public officer details where applicable.
- Bank account details and proof if SARS requests it.
- Sales records showing taxable supplies and threshold position.
- Nature of business activities and supporting documents.
Using official SARS channels
SARS guidance points taxpayers to eFiling and official SARS processes for VAT registration. Use official SARS pages and messages rather than third-party forms that ask for unnecessary login details.
After applying
Watch for SARS requests for supporting documents or clarification. Do not charge VAT until you are properly registered and understand the effective date and invoicing requirements. Once registered, prepare for VAT201 filing and payment deadlines.
Common registration mistakes
- Applying before checking whether supplies are taxable.
- Using turnover figures that include exempt or irrelevant amounts without review.
- Missing SARS document requests after submission.
- Charging VAT before the registration position is confirmed.
- Not updating accounting systems for VAT invoices and VAT201 returns.
