SARS eFiling OTP Not Received
What to check when a SARS eFiling one-time PIN does not arrive by SMS or email, and when to update security contact details.
Last updated: 19 May 2026
Check the OTP channel
An OTP problem is often a contact-detail problem. Check whether SARS is sending the OTP to an email address or cellphone number you still control. Also check spam folders, blocked SMS settings, full inboxes and whether your phone has signal or roaming limits.
Do not keep requesting pins blindly
If no OTP arrives after a reasonable wait, avoid repeated requests without checking the channel. Multiple requests can create confusion about which OTP is current. Use the newest OTP only and restart the official flow if the OTP has expired.
Update security contact details
If the OTP goes to an old number or email address, update the SARS security contact details through the official eFiling or SARS support process. SARS guidance indicates that profile and security detail changes may involve identity checks, especially where access happens before login.
Urgent filing deadline steps
If an OTP issue blocks a deadline, document the issue, keep screenshots, and use official SARS support or appointment channels. For high-value, penalty-risk or disputed matters, get help from a registered tax practitioner before the deadline passes.
Common causes
- Old cellphone number or email address on the SARS profile.
- SMS delayed by network coverage or roaming.
- Email filtered to spam, junk or promotions.
- Too many OTP requests, causing confusion about the current code.
- Browser session expired before the OTP was entered.
